Luxury Beach Holiday to Mauritius

Enjoy a memorable holiday in the tropical isle of Mauritius.  Whether you are wanting an active vacation with hiking, diving and fishing excursions; a relaxing time sightseeing and enjoying the beaches or a shopping vacation-  Mauritius delivers.  The island has distinct areas that appeal to many different activities

The capital, Port Louis is a modern city located on the northwest coast of the island.  Its busy port features the Caudan Waterfront, a high-end shopping, dining and entertainment area.  You can shop to your heart’s delight in over 115 stores featuring jewelry, fashion, accessories and much more.  The shops feature brands such as Calvin Klein, Celio, Timberland and Karl Kaiser as well as unique items from local designers. Dining possibilities range from gourmet restaurants to cafés and bars.  Entertainment options include the Star Cinema and The Casino, an area designed like a pirate ship.  While visiting Port Louis be sure to spend an exciting Saturday or Sunday afternoon (March-December) at the Champs de Mars Racecourse, the oldest horse racetrack in the southern hemisphere.

Head to the tourism hub of Mauritius in the north to see some of the most magnificent beaches on earth, including Trou aux Biches,  Mont Choisy and Pereybere cove.  You will also be enchanted by the grounds of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) Botanical Gardens and Pamplemousses. The Mauritius Aquarium in Pointe aux Piments is also a must-see for aquatic enthusiasts.  One of featured accommodations in this area is Trou aux Biches Resort & Spa, a luxury resort that includes suites and villas with private pools.  In addition to being located on a beautiful beach, this award-winning property includes a tropical lagoon, a 35-hectare tropical garden and six restaurants for your dining pleasure.

The eastern part of Mauritius is a nature lover’s paradise.  The Grand River provides many excursion possibilities with its beautiful waterfall and inviting riverbanks.  Scuba diving is at its best on these shores with old shipwrecks to explore.  The white sand beaches of Belle Mare and Palmar offer unparalleled views and serenity while the high cliffs in the south-east area with its dramatic shorelines will delight photographers. A recommended property in this area is LUX Belle Mare, a lovely resort with a beautiful beach and comfortable lounging chairs. The LUX differentiates itself with a personal butler, cold towels at the beach and quirky surprises such as 'message in a bottle' - gift vouchers in bottles hidden away all around the property.

The views in the south part of Mauritius are quite different from the other areas.  This part of the island has dramatic cliffs and sheer descents into the Indian Ocean.  As you head around the island on a westerly route, you find beaches such as Blue Bay and Gris Gris.  Rugged beauty and culture join on the southwestern side of the island.  This area, known as the Le Morne Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its history as a shelter used by runaway slaves in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Situated below the towering rock is the beautiful three mile Le Morne beach.  This is also an area for sports and nature lovers with deep sea fishing, surfing and snorkeling available off the beaches of Flic en Flac and Tamarin Bay.  In this area, the St. Regis Mauritius Resort offers five star luxury with breathtaking views over the Indian Ocean.  You will find the type of holiday experience you desire in Mauritius.

Where to stay on Mauritius

In terms of where to holiday in Mauritius the island can be broadly categorized as follows:

Northern and North West Mauritius is where the majority of hotels and resort facilities are located due to the warmer temperatures here as well as being protected from the prevailing South Easterly winds.

The South and East part of the island is more ‘rustic’ and less developed. There are some beautiful hideaway retreats in the this area. During the winter months (out summer) the strong winds in this area make southern Mauritius one of the best windsurf and kitesurf destinations in the world.

The East coast of Mauritius offers a more ’local Mauritian’ atmosphere with many good local restaurants. There are again some high standard hotels here in the resort of Belle Mar.

Central Mauritius is dominated by lush vegetation and sugar cane fields along with some thick wooded area
